Dambulla Cave Temple

Dambulla Cave Temple – The Golden Rock Temple of Sri Lanka

The Dambulla Cave Temple, also known as Dambulla Viharaya or the Golden Temple of Dambulla, is one of Sri Lanka’s most treasured cultural and religious landmarks. Located in the Central Province, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is the largest and best-preserved cave temple complex in Sri Lanka, attracting thousands of visitors each year.

A Sacred History

The temple’s history dates back over 2,000 years. It is believed that King Valagamba of Anuradhapura, after regaining his throne in the 1st century BCE, converted the caves into a Buddhist temple to express gratitude for sheltering him during his exile.

The Cave Complex

Dambulla has five main caves, each filled with stunning statues and paintings of the Buddha, along with images of kings and Hindu deities. In total, there are over 150 Buddha statues inside, with the largest being a massive reclining Buddha measuring 15 meters in length.

The cave walls and ceilings are adorned with colorful murals depicting important events from the life of the Buddha, as well as stories from Buddhist scriptures.

The Golden Temple

At the base of the rock stands the Golden Temple of Dambulla, marked by a huge golden Buddha statue. This modern addition beautifully complements the ancient cave complex above and is a striking symbol of the site.

Spiritual and Cultural Significance

Dambulla is not just a tourist attraction – it is an active place of worship. Pilgrims from all over Sri Lanka come here to offer flowers, light oil lamps, and meditate in the sacred caves.
