Kataragama Devalaya

Kataragama Devalaya – A Sacred Pilgrimage Site in Sri Lanka

Located in the deep south of Sri Lanka, the Kataragama Devalaya is one of the most revered religious sites in the country. Dedicated to Lord Kataragama (Skanda or Murugan), it is a unique shrine where Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims, and even indigenous Vedda communities come together in devotion.

A Place of Shared Faith

Kataragama Devalaya stands out as a symbol of religious harmony. While it is primarily dedicated to the Hindu god Skanda/Murugan, Buddhists worship here as a guardian deity of Buddhism, and Muslims revere the site as well. This diversity makes Kataragama one of the most multi-religious pilgrimage centers in Sri Lanka.

History and Legends

The origins of the shrine date back over 2,000 years. According to legend, Lord Skanda chose Kataragama as his home after defeating evil forces. Ancient kings, including King Dutugemunu, are believed to have visited and patronized the shrine, adding to its historical importance.

The Kataragama Festival (Esala Perahera)

Every year, in July and August, the shrine hosts the Kataragama Esala Perahera – a colorful and deeply spiritual festival. Devotees take part in:

Processions with elephants, dancers, and drummers

Fire walking and body-piercing rituals performed by extreme devotees

Offerings of fruits and flowers to the deity

This festival draws thousands of pilgrims from across Sri Lanka and abroad.

Daily Rituals

The shrine has daily pujas (offerings and prayers), performed with great devotion. Visitors can witness drumming, chanting, and blessings throughout the day.
