The Sacred Temple by the River
Just 11 kilometers from Colombo, on the banks of the Kelani River, stands the magnificent Kelaniya Raja Maha Viharaya. Known locally as Kelani Viharaya, this temple is one of the most important and venerated Buddhist temples in Sri Lanka, drawing both devotees and visitors from around the world.
A Sacred Legacy
According to tradition, Lord Buddha visited Kelaniya during His third visit to Sri Lanka. It is believed that the temple enshrines a gem-studded throne upon which the Buddha once sat while preaching. Because of this, Kelaniya Viharaya is recognized as one of the 16 Solosmasthana (the most sacred Buddhist shrines in the country).
