Mahiyanganaya – The First Sacred City of Buddhism in Sri Lanka

The Sacred Story
According to ancient chronicles, during the first visit of the Buddha (around 528 BC), He came to Mahiyanganaya to bring peace among the Yakkas (the indigenous people of the island). After hearing the Buddha’s teachings, many converted to Buddhism, and the place became blessed as the starting point of the island’s Buddhist heritage.
The Mahiyanganaya Stupa was later built to enshrine a lock of the Buddha’s hair, making it the very first Buddhist stupa in Sri Lanka. Over centuries, kings expanded and renovated it, turning it into the magnificent structure seen today.
Pilgrimage and Devotion
Today, Mahiyanganaya Temple (Mahiyangana Raja Maha Viharaya) is visited by thousands of devotees year-round. Many pilgrims come especially during poya days to offer flowers, light lamps, and meditate under the sacred Bo tree. The white stupa shines brightly against the backdrop of lush greenery, creating an atmosphere of peace and reflection.
